People moving to homes in Sefton are waiting up to four months for council tax applications to be processed amid a backlog exacerbated by the cost of living crisis.
The resident said they were concerned they could find themselves struggling to cover a "huge bill" backdated many months once the application has been processed and were concerned at what could be causing the situation and the potential impact on other residents in the borough. A spokesperson for Sefton Council said staff were working extra hours to try to reduce waiting times and the local authority was prioritising the most vulnerable, confirming that waiting times for some applications could reach 18 weeks before being processed.
“Enquiries around a change of address or a new occupier can take up to 18 weeks to process in some circumstances. The Council will always try to support residents struggling with their Council Tax payments by working with them to extend payment over a longer period of time.
