Since video doorbells became a thing, I know of several mates for whom a quick look at their phone screen determines whether they answer an unexpected ring at the door. ✒️ CharleneWhite on why people who 'pop in' unannounced are the worst

Charlene White: ‘Now that we’re all proper grown-ups and many of us have kids, my friends would be mortified if anyone suddenly turned up without warning’

The house is currently in no fit state for unannounced pop-ins – the breakfast bowls are still by the sink and the crumbs from toast still scattered across the table. It might be in a fit state tomorrow, since I’ll be off work and I’ll finally get round to giving it a tidy. But until that point, I just can’t have people popping in without notice. It would be beyond embarrassing.

Then you throw that lost week between Christmas and New Year into the mix and the stakes become higher. There’s a lot more dead time to fill, and names of friends you haven’t caught up with in a while start swirling around in the mind. And so the inclination to pop in unannounced, or what I call “pop-in-ology”, starts to rear its head.

My friend Leon, who lived around the corner, dropped in so often that my mum would make sure she cooked extra dinner on a daily basis so that he never left our house hungry. And there would always be enough food left over for whichever of our mates turned up unannounced later on Christmas Day . My parents were big pop-in fans.
