Experts have offered some key advice

A warning has been issued to those with pear or apple trees in their gardens as Britain endures icy January temperatures. The Royal Horticultural Society provides important advice for gardeners throughout the year to ensure their plants and trees continue to thrive as the seasons change.

In healthy trees, excessive pruning will result in too much regrowth, leading to "vigorous upright branches called watershoots", which are best avoided as they "crowd the crown". If these watershoots are growing in a beneficial way, such as filling a gap, you can prune it by about a third to encourage branching, but otherwise, the RHS recommends removing them from their point of origin.

The RHS suggests selectively removing or shortening branches to thin out crowded areas rather than making drastic cuts. For densely packed seedlings, pulling some out to provide more space can be beneficial.
