Patients would not want to be caught high and dry without their medications
Having a long-term or lifelong medical condition often requires a great deal of prescription juggling, such as having to figure out when your medication might run out and when you will next be able to make it to your pharmacy for a refill. But there are a few days every year when planning goes out the window and the NHS finds itself swamped by requests for prescriptions.
Easter gets the worst of it, with call handlers seeing a 250 per cent increase in people seeking repeat prescriptions when they have other people to triage and find medical care for. This has led the North West's pharmacy boss Karen O’Brien to call on people with these regular medications to plan ahead of this year's Easter Bank Holidays, which are on Friday, March 29, and Monday, April 1.
“Running out of your usual medication can have serious consequences, especially if you use them to control a heart condition and breathing problems or a health condition such as diabetes and is the last thing you want to do while your friends and family are together.”
