Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola spoke to reporters for the first time since deciding to sign a new deal at the Etihad
The Blues boss surprised many not just by committing his future at the Etihad but to extend for another two years that will take him to the summer of 2027. If he sees out his deal, and he has seen out every deal in his coaching career, he will have been in Manchester for 11 years.
There is obvious delight at the club that they have managed to secure their coach for another two seasons. Guardiola insists it will come down to results whether he is able to see out that time, but speaking to reporters for the first time since his contract was announced he said the extra year on his deal was to avoid a similar situation playing out next year.
"Mainly I don't want next season in September, October, November to be 'Pep, will he extend again'. I don't want to be in that position," he said. "The contract is there. I would like to stay two more years but I know if the results are good I will not stay for two more years. We have legendary players here in the team but if we don't perform our fans and chairman will ask what is going on and you have to change.
"Everyone is under pressure. I have the contract but maybe in a month I am not here. Maybe I am arrogant but I think we deserve to continue for what we have done in the last years. I'm not naive enough to stay because I have a contract or what I have done in the past. I deserve to extend my contract but we have to do it again and if not the club have to find a solution."
