Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola spoke about Manchester United's position after the derby
Pep Guardiola warned that Manchester City cannot get ahead of themselves after dismantling Manchester United in the derby.
A win for Erik ten Hag's side last week would have moved them to within three points of the Blues in the Premier League table, but a 3-0 victory for the visitors made it nine instead and that gap does not seem to cover the chasm between the clubs. Another 3-0 home defeat, this time to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, has plunged United into another crisis with more scrutiny than ever on Ten Hag's position as he looks to salvage a team that has had £400m spent on it in two years.
City meanwhile have used a rare week off to allow a third of their squad to attend the Ballon d'Or awards in Paris, where Erling Haaland finished second in the main prize and five Blues made the top ten in addition to CEO Ferran Soriano picking up the award for men's club of the year. United's position has been made even more uncomfortable by the incredible success that their noisy neighbours are currently enjoying.
Guardiola, though, was in no mood to gloat. The City boss rejected the idea that their derby victory had been easy in any way and suggested that they and any other club were not so good that they would not go through the same issues that United have. "I have a lot of respect for United," he said. "The period they have now, we can have it. Nobody is away from these kind of situations. We won because we played a good game but that's all."
