Perennial contenders see off mighty challenge to book Super Netball prelim final showdown
Sunday Aryang of the Fever high fives her teammates during the Super Netball Minor Semi Final match between West Coast Fever and Sunshine Coast Lightning at RAC Arena, on July 21, 2024, in Perth , Australia . West Coast Fever coach Dan Ryan has spoken all season about playing the long game, and Sunday’s semi final was a testament to that mentality.
Speaking before the game, Lightning’s Liz Watson called for her side to play without fear. They fulfilled the brief early on, clogging up Fever’s fluency in attack, and forcing them multiple errors. Fever shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard took matters into her own hands, monstering Courtney Bruce, and forcing Lightning coach Belinda Reynolds into changes. She shifted Bruce forwards and added the height of Ash Ervin under the post, with the change paying some dividends. Despite the pressure, Fowler-Nembhard was imperious as she topscored with 67/69 to earn MVP honours.
Fever dominated all statistics, converting 81 percent of their centre passes, and 40 percent of their missed goals, compared to Lightning’s miserable nine percent. However, Lightning’s four young rookies all stood up in their first final’s match, and should prove to be a formidable force next season.
