NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has admitted he was 'too strong' in calling for the teenager who racially abused Latrell Mitchell to receive a life ban.

The 15-year-old allegedly yelled “black dog” at South Sydney Rabbitohs fullback Latrell Mitchell as he walked up the player’s race at halftime against the Penrith Panthers last Thursday.

“As Premier of the state I need to do everything I can to make people across NSW appreciate and understand there is no racism,” he told 2GB Radio host Ben Fordham. The Premier clarified the softening in his stance did not change his view that “there’s no place for racism in sport”. “I shouldn’t have to be able to come here as a coach and lead a team of players here to be racially abused,” Demetriou said on the night.
