Steven Gallagher hoarded nearly 10,000 images showing 'brutal torture and extreme injuries' being inflicted
A "lonely and frail" pensioner downloaded a "massive collection" of illegal pornography from a website called "Torture Galaxy".
Iain Criddle, prosecuting, described how officers seized a number of electronic devices from the address, including a USB stick and two hard drives. These were subsequently found to contain one category A indecent image, one category C indecent image and 182 "cartoon or computer generated images" showing the abuse of children.
Gallagher, who walked into the dock with the aid of a frame, was previously handed a suspended prison sentence in 2005 for possession of indecent images of children. Under interview, he accepted using the internet browser DuckDuckGo and a VPN - which allow the user to "disguise what they are doing" online - as well as "accessing Japanese pornography".
"He is a very vulnerable man. He has never been in a relationship of any description and he lives on his own. Sentencing, Judge David Potter said his collection was "representative of the most graphic imagery of sadism and torture" which saw "degradation and pain inflicted on people for the purposes of sexual gratification". He added: "They are as extreme as any imagery this court has ever come across.
