Small businesses could claim a tax refund for staff lunches or client golf trips under the policy proposal.

Peter Dutton addressed a rally of party faithful in Brisbane on Sunday to announce a tax-free lunch policy for small businesses.A new Coalition election policy would give small businesses a tax deduction if they take staff or clients out for a meal or entertainment.

"Hospitality is a huge part of the economy and yet like so many businesses at the moment, they are hurting under Labor … We want to help those businesses survive," he said. The prime minister rubbished the tax-free lunch policy, saying Mr Dutton had opposed the government's energy bill relief and other cost of living policies.

"That's a lot of jobs to be cut and a lot of services to be reduced because there's no way you can continue to deliver services if you have hundreds of people not there doing the work that's needed," she said.In a lengthy campaign speech, Mr Dutton listed several existing Coalition policies, including a scheme for first homebuyers to access their superannuation and a long-term aspiration to build nuclear power plants with taxpayer funds.
