The federal government and Opposition are at odds as to how to respond to allegations of corruption within the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU).
The federal government's response to allegations of corruption within one of Australia's biggest unions is "nonsense", according to the Opposition, which has urged a course of action Labor says would be "a gift to the worst elements". An independent administrator is set to be appointed following reports of criminal misconduct and links to organised crime figures within the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union .
Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke said the Fair Work Commission was "best placed" to respond to the matter. "I do believe these actions are best taken by the regulator but any action to appoint an administrator will be supported by me as minister," he told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday. A court application will be made by the Fair Work Commission to nominate an independent administrator to the CFMEU.
