A Parliamentary petition is calling on the UK government to require car insurance companies to insure vehicles instead of drivers, citing concerns about discrimination, particularly against young people. The petition highlights the significant increase in car insurance premiums for young drivers, with some facing price hikes of over £1,000. It argues that insuring cars rather than individuals would base pricing on the vehicle itself, eliminating potential driver-related biases.
The Labour Party government is facing criticism for allowing car insurance prices to skyrocket, with a Parliamentary petition now demanding changes, reports Birmingham Live.
The petition proposes: "We believe that car insurance companies should be required to only insure cars, so any driver with a full and valid licence would be insured when driving an insured vehicle. This would base car insurance pricing on the car itself, and not driver demographics." This comes after elderly drivers called on the government to intervene over rising car tax. One disgruntled driver complained: "It is a farce, I have a 1600cc petrol car, yet somehow than is supposed to emit more than the 2000cc diesel I had."
