Community groups and residents are seeking additional funding as they campaign for the inclusion of a full-size games hall

More than 1200 people have signed a petition calling for the new Larkhall Leisure Centre to have a games hall – as local residents take their “last opportunity to act” over the proposed new facility.

The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.Further support for the petition is being gathered on a paper copy available at community centre The Lighthouse, while residents are also being asked to contact South Lanarkshire Council leader Joe Fagan with their views.

LPP chair Nancy Barr said: “The new leisure centre is an investment in Larkhall’s health and wellbeing for generations to come – it is essential the new facility is fit for the future and fully resourced. Larkhall has seen many community spaces close over recent years, including Hareleeshill Sports Barn and Larkhall Community Centre.

The partnership group says that a “fit for purpose” leisure centre replicating the current facilities has been a priority in their local survey and planning work for the past six years, saying residents in the growing town “feel strongly about this issue”. Councillor Fagan told Lanarkshire Live that the £23.9m centre is “by a huge margin, the biggest investment the council is currently planning in a new facility anywhere in South Lanarkshire” and said: “It will indeed be an investment in the health and wellbeing of the town for generations to come, and we have consulted with local people to plan the best possible centre we can get within the budget that is available.
