Colombian President Gustavo Petro has accused Donald Trump of being a 'white slaveholder' and condemned his actions as a threat to humanity. The dispute stems from Colombia's refusal to allow US migrant deportation flights to land, prompting retaliatory tariffs and visa restrictions from Trump. Petro has responded with biting criticism and a counter-tariff, escalating the tensions between the two nations.
Colombia n President Gustavo Petro has launched a scathing attack on Donald Trump , calling him a 'white slaveholder' and accusing him of being on a path to 'wipe out the human species' due to his greed. This latest outburst follows a bitter dispute that erupted when Petro blocked two US migrant deportation flights from entering Colombia . Trump swiftly retaliated by threatening Colombia with hefty import tariffs and a halt to visa processing.
Initially, Petro appeared to back down, even offering his presidential plane to transport deported migrants from the US to Colombia. However, Petro's conciliatory gesture was short-lived. He subsequently issued a fiery condemnation of Trump, stating, 'You don't like our freedom, okay. I don't shake hands with white slavers.' He further warned, 'Overthrow me, President, and the Americas and humanity will respond... You can try to carry out a coup with your economic strength and your arrogance.'Trump had earlier imposed a 25 percent tariff on Colombian imports and revoked visas for Colombian government officials after the nation refused to allow two planeloads of US deportees to land. He threatened to increase the tariff to 50 percent within a week. Petro responded by imposing a 25 percent tariff - set to rise to 50 percent - on US goods entering Colombia. The escalating conflict has devolved into a war of words, with Petro criticizing the US in general terms and expressing disdain for traveling there. He stated, 'I don't really like traveling to the US, it's a bit boring... I confess that there are some commendable things.' He even drew comparisons to the social dynamics in Washington, D.C., observing, 'I like going to the black neighbourhoods of Washington, where I saw an entire fight in the US capital between blacks and Latinos with barricades, which seemed like nonsense to me, because they should join.'Petro made his stance clear, refusing to back down despite the White House's assertion that he had appeased Trump on the migrant flight issue after offering his plane. He declared, 'You will never rule us.' He then invoked the legacy of Simón Bolívar, the South American revolutionary who fought for independence from Spain, asserting, 'The warrior who rode our lands, shouting freedom, who is called Bolívar, opposes us. I will die in my law, I resisted torture and I resist you.' He concluded, 'I don't want slavers next to Colombia, we already had many and we freed ourselves. What I want next to Colombia are lovers of freedom.
