Former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has raised concerns over the financial sustainability of golf's leading tours, warning that they could be heading towards bankruptcy if the current trend of escalating prize money continues. The sport has seen a significant increase in prize funds since the emergence of LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), two years ago.

In response to LIV Golf's competitive payouts, both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour have increased their own prize pots in an effort to keep players. McGinley, however, views this as a potentially perilous strategy that may offer short-term gains at the expense of long-term stability, reports the Irish Mirror. In a discussion with Irish Golfer Magazine, McGinley expressed his concerns: 'The world's two main tours have always been member organizations. That has worked well for over 50 years, but in this modern world of top-level sport, that dynamic is turning into a double edged sword, as there seems to be too much focus on the present and not enough on the future of the Tours and their financial sustainability.' He added, 'Granted, they have had to react to the emergence of a serious rival, but if things continue as they currently are, then the established Tours are on the road to being unsustainable and maybe even bankruptcy.'
