AMID tensions in the Asia-Pacific region that include the continuous aggressiveness of China in the South China Sea , President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said the security cooperation between the Philippines and its longstanding ally, the United States, will “just keep going.”

Harris visited the Philippines in November 2022, including Puerto Princesa in Palawan, one of the provinces closest to the disputed WPS, where she had the opportunity to chat with some of the local fishermen. Earlier, the Chinese Embassy in Manila said the US is only using the Philippines for its “selfish geopolitical interests” when it sought for the additional Edca sites in the country as it upholds the Mutual Defense Treaty.

The Philippine government has filed hundreds of diplomatic protests against China over the past years for harassing Filipino fishermen and troops amid their claims in over 90 percent of the WPS.
