It’s unclear just how many unused medications and other pharmaceutical waste is getting into local waters and impacting the ecosystem

In recent years, San Francisco has successfully disposed of more than 100,000 pounds of unused medication that otherwise could have wound up in the hands of the wrong people or as refuse in the San Francisco Bay .

“You start to pull together this soup of unwanted pharmaceutical stuff in our water bodies,” said Jue, whose department runs the disposal program. The increased attention on forever chemicals is likely due to increases in related regulatory changes, Sedlak said. Just this month, President Joe Biden introduced a new drinking-water standard to prevent further exposure to forever chemicals, which coincided with $1 billion in funding for the Environmental Protection Agency to help communities establish testing and treatment for forever chemicals for public water systems and private wells.
