Being tired beyond your post-turkey nap, excessive bloating and being stuffed before starters could all be signs that there's something more serious going on

The festive season is a time for celebration, spending quality time with loved ones and, of course, indulging in food. It's estimated that the average Brit consumes around 6,000 calories on Christmas Day – two or three times the recommended daily intake. And that doesn't even cover the leftovers on Boxing Day and Twixmas.

The stubborn bloated belly Feeling bloated after devouring a turkey dinner is expected at Christmas, particularly if you eat too quickly or have difficulty digesting food. This is typically a result of the stomach expanding to accommodate extra food and gas accumulating in the intestines, advises Mr Jones.

Too many trips to the loo Overindulgence during the festive season can often result in more frequent trips to the loo, particularly after a rich meal laden with high-fat and sugary foods. However, if you find yourself needing the toilet more than usual and it's not just due to overeating, this could be a warning sign, according to the pharmacist.

"Bowel cancer can cause anaemia, as blood loss in the bowel reduces the number of red blood cells in your body, leading to exhaustion. If this symptom persists long after the festive season, speak to a healthcare professional," Mr Jones urges. Feeling full before you've even started on the starters? "It's easy to overestimate your appetite when faced with a spread of festive delights, but if you find you feel unusually full after eating very little, this could signal a deeper issue," adds Mr Jones.
