HB238, more commonly known as the FAIR Meds Act, is supposed to ensure chain pharmacies and independently owned pharmacies receive equal compensation, plus receive dispensing fees to cover additional costs.
The bill is receiving pushback, but that could be because people don't understand the proposed law hoping to save independent pharmacies.COVINGTON COUNTY, Ala. - A bill in the Alabama legislature that could help locally owned pharmacies is receiving pushback from the public.
“Over 10% of our prescriptions, we had a significant loss where insurance did not even reimburse us the full cost of the medication we dispensed to the patient,” said Rebecca Simmons, owner of T&C Pharmacy in Opp. “Much less any kind of fee to cover any overhead such as employees, utilities or anything like that.”
Many people have resentment to the bill, due to a $10.64 dispensing fee, in fear their prescriptions prices could rise. “Large PBMS, their insurers, and their attack dogs have falsely accused this legislation as having a tax. It does not have a tax. That is a false narrative created by those that oppose the bill and want to keep business as usual in Alabama since they are the ones making money from the businesses and people of Alabama. Cost plus pricing has the ability to lower costs, increase transparency, while at the same time paying pharmacists fairly.
