Mickelson was the instigative player behind the controversial Saudi-backed circuit and a number of past Masters champions have taken issue with his behaviour over the last year. Fred Couples, the 1992 Masters champion, talking to Golf.com last June, said of Mickelson: “I don’t think I’ll ever talk to him again.”
Meanwhile, five-time winner Tiger Woods said in July: “They’ve turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position.”Fellow LIV players Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia were also present at the Champions Dinner, while 18 rebels in total will tee it up at Augusta on Thursday.
