UPDATE: MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel BRP Cabra (MMRV-4409) is 'vigilantly' monitoring the illegal presence of a China Coast Guard (CCG) ship continuing to operate for the fourth day within the Philippines ' exclusive economic zone ( EEZ ). Also spotted hovering the Philippine ship was a People's Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) helicopter, said PCG spokesman for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela.
In a report issued on Wednesday, the PCG said the PLA-N helicopter hovered above the PCG ship as it watched the activities of the largest CCG vessel, with bow number 5901, also known as 'The Monster' due to its massive size, operating 60-70 nautical miles from the Zambales coastline. DILAN'As in previous encounters, the CCG-5901 was subjected to radio challenges, highlighting her unlawful operations within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone and asserting that she lacks the legal authority to conduct law enforcement patrols in the area,' Tarriela said in a post over X Tuesday night. The PLA-N helicopter, identified by tail number 47, shadowed BRP Cabra as it asserted the legality of its patrol in the area. The PCG said the Philippine vessel challenged the presence of CCG-5901, using radio communications to assert that the Chinese vessel had no lawful authority to enforce maritime laws. The overflight by the Chinese helicopter only added to the already charged atmosphere, Tarriela said, prompting PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan to 'issue clear guidance to remain unthreatened and to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions.'Gavan said the PCG 'remains resolutely committed to safeguarding our sovereign rights and will not allow the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard vessel to infringe upon our maritime jurisdiction.' The CCG ship was spotted on the coastline of Capones Island in Zambales on Jan. 4, 202
