'It's just electric.' 'This kid's going to be a star.' 'Is that how old he is, 19?' It wasn't an eye-popping spring training debut, but the Phillies' Andrew Painter looked like he belonged
’s hitters swung-and-missed at two of Painter’s pitches. It was not the storybook, eye-popping debut.“He’s mature beyond his years,” Correa said. “Pounded the zone, not afraid of anyone, just going out there and throwing strikes. Very special.”throw a pitch in the majors as a teenager
Scott Kingery, who played second base Wednesday, approached Painter in the dugout after his two-inning start. “Man,” Kingery told him, “that’s really good.”In Kingery’s eyes, Painter did everything he was supposed to do. “For a first start,” Kingery said, “that’s all you can ask for right there.” He pounded the zone. He did not look overwhelmed. He probably had an extra gear he resisted going to because it was March 1. The fastball still averaged 97 mph.Kingery said. “It jumps out of his hand.
“I think he was looking for a little bit of affirmation,” Stubbs said later. “Obviously, I don’t think he really needed it after watching the result. But, yeah, that was a really good pitch.” There are reasons to cast doubt on the whole notion of Painter breaking camp with the Phillies. They don’t have to do it, but club officials do not view that as a compelling enough reason for Painter to start the season in the minors. If they see enough, he’ll be in the rotation. There are concerns within the organization about how fastball-reliant Painter was when he soared through the minors last season; it’s why developing the cutter was a priority.
“He’s got electric stuff,” Correa said. “He’s going to be in the big leagues pretty soon, and that’s exciting at a young age with all that potential. He’s got a great mound presence.”
