The Philippines’s pork imports this year may expand by 2.71 percent year-on-year to a record 341,000 metric tons to plug the shortfall in domestic supply created by African swine fever , a United Nations agency said.

Despite the lukewarm outlook on the Philippines’s pig herd recovery, FAO projected that the country’s local pig production would grow slightly this year to 1.192 million metric tons from 1.118 MMT last year. It also projected that the country’s total meat imports this year could grow by 1.4 percent to 948,000 MT from 935,000 MT last year. The Philippines’s local meat production this year, meanwhile, may expand by 1.32 percent year-on-year to 2.823 MMT.

In the same report, FAO said the Philippines’s dairy imports this year would increase due to “rising consumer demand.” It noted that the country’s local milk production is unable to meet growing demand for the commodity.
