One of the most famous images of all time

One of the photographers who took the famous Tank Man picture during the Tiananmen Square protests has died at the age of 64.

Charlie Cole died last week, just over 30 years after he and three other photographers took the famous picture. He went on to win the 1990 World Press Photo award for his picture of a man standing in defiance against a tank. It became a defining image of the 1989 pro-democracy protests in which thousands are believed to have died.

The picture was taken from the balcony of a nearby hotel using a telephoto lens for Newsweek. Realising the power of the image and knowing that he would be searched by Chinese authorities, he hid the film containing the image in the hotel bathroom.supports HTML5 videoIt had been expected that the man would be killed but, armed with two bags, he managed to stop the column of tanks.Eventually two people pulled him to the side of the road and his whereabouts remain a mystery to this day.
