24-year-old Mitchell’s once-in-a-generation talent can now be experienced through his powerful new solo exhibition, I Can Make You Feel Good.
Based in Brooklyn, Mitchell made history twice-over in 2018 as the first black artist to shoot acover. Aged just 23 at the time of the sitting, his revolutionary portrait of Beyoncé, bathed in natural light, for the September issue of AmericanThis month marks another milestone – his debut US solo exhibition,, on show at New York’s International Center of Photography until 18 May 2020, is the culmination of years of visual study.
“I think that’s the beauty of what diverse opinions from diverse creators bring. When we talk about diversity in fashion and the arts it’s exciting, because there are multiple narratives that are coming from people who look like me that are existing in bigger contexts, which I think is a beautiful thing. But there’s definitely a lot of structural change needed.
“I was named Gordon Parks Foundation 2020 fellow in December 2019, which is going to be amazing because, essentially, they provide a grant to mine Parks’ archive and make a project that continues his legacy. I’m going to be looking at a lot of his fashion images forfrom the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and making a project that responds to them. It’s nice to look to the past to be able to do that, because there are so many missed moments in history.
“My whole goal for the next couple of years is to work with [cultural] institutions as much as I possibly can – adding context to what I’m doing in the fashion realm and bringing alive so many of the things that you might not necessarilywhen you encounter a beautiful picture on Instagram.
