Belfast Central Library was opened on October 13, 1888, the same day Belfast achieved city status
Belfast Central Library on Royal Avenue was opened on October 13, 1888, after the people of the city came together to raise funding to create a free library.
She also highlighted how members of the public may not be aware of the sheer size of the Central Library, as only 20% of it is open to the public with the remainder containing a huge range of treasures from Northern Ireland's history. "On its 135th birthday, the library still has many of its original features from when it first opened, although there have been a few changes over the years, and many people will not be aware that it initially had a museum section prior to the opening of the Ulster Museum.
"There is also a special member's fair where we are encouraging as many new members to join the library as possible. “To mark the occasion, the library will host a free celebratory programme of events and I would encourage everyone to come along and see why this iconic building will firmly remain part of Belfast’s future for many years to come.”
