McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have demonstrated a strong team spirit, prioritizing each other's success even amidst the debate surrounding potential team orders.
Oscar Piastri has stated that he and his Formula 1 teammate Lando Norris would always prioritize what is best for each other, regardless of any pre-determined McLaren team orders . Team orders became a topic of discussion for the Woking-based team as Norris competed with Red Bull's Max Verstappen for the drivers' championship, with McLaren's performance improving while Red Bull's slightly declined in the middle of the season.
This discussion intensified after Norris allowed Piastri to retake the lead at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having overtaken him during the pitstop phase, as McLaren was concerned about an undercut from behind. Team orders were further highlighted when Norris was forced to fight for positions after a forceful, yet fair, maneuver by Piastri into the Roggia chicane on the opening lap of the Italian GP, raising more doubts about McLaren's management of the situation. Team principal Andrea Stella later explained that he didn't want to negatively affect team morale by implementing team orders too early. However, after Piastri aided Norris in his ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of the championship, Norris returned the favor on the final lap of the Qatar sprint race, demonstrating the strong relationship between them as the team achieved their first constructors' championship since 1998. Asked if it was beneficial that ground rules had been established during a year where Piastri was not in contention for the drivers' title, he told Motorsport: 'I mean, it's a bit of a catch-22. I think if I was better situated, then there wouldn't be team orders. 'I think it's been made a much bigger deal than it has been, you know. There's not really been any situation so far where we've actually needed to use them, so to speak
