Social media users were stunned to find out that picking bluebonnets won't put you behind bars.
Many Texans ' worlds were changed this week when a post by country artist Kacey Musgraves revealed that it is not in fact illegal to pick bluebonnets. The Texas native posted a photo Sunday holding a fistful of the state flower, and users flooded the comment section with conversation about whether bringing bluebonnets home with you would land you behind bars. 'Just learned it’s not illegal to pick bluebonnets from the comments,' one user said. 'I’ve believed that my whole life.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed this in 2015. 'There is no law against picking the state flower,' DPS said in a release, but that doesn't give bluebonnet lovers free rein. The agency warned against digging up clusters of the flowers or driving into a field of them, which could result in charges for damaging or destroying rights-of-way or government property.
