Gareth Dean carried out a shocking and unprovoked attack on Matthew Syron in a Leeds city centre bar
A thug with a long history of violence has been jailed after he glassed another man in an "unprovoked, cowardly and sickening attack" in a Leeds city centre bar.
In an apparent show of no remorse, Dean left and went to another bar. He handed himself in to police six days later. "I've gone from someone not needing anyone to being a 32-year-old like a baby. It's soul destroying...I hate every day. I hate it, depending on other people...All I do is depoend on someone else to get me through the day. I can't explain how soul destroying it is."
Mr Syron's mum told the court in a statement she already felt "let down" due to the sentences imposed for Dean's previous convictions and asked the judge: "Please do not let us down again." She said: "He clearly hasn't reformed and I hope you conclude with me what a dangerous offender he is...Please hear my voice before this happens to another family."
"He does appear to have expressed genuine remorse - I appreciate it is a small comfort to the victim and his family. He's obviously someone who is capable of acting decently and well and responsibly. You know he has friends and family who think well of him. You know he looks after an unwell and disabled mother and her partner dependant on him and they too will suffer as a result of what he's done. That's about it.
