A ‘mentally exhausted’ Tom Pidcock rued a ‘sluggish’ display in the men’s road race as his dream of doubling up at Paris 2024 faded away.

That left him one minute and 50 seconds behind Remco Evenepoel, who backed up his time trial success to become the first man to do that particular double at the same Games.“I was a bit sluggish and slow, I was never really in the proper race. Evenepoel’s mechanical difficulties came with 3.5km to go but his lead was comfortable enough for him to cross the line over a minute clear of French duo Valentin Madouas and Christophe Laporte, who completed the podium.

“We all know each other but we don’t race on the road together, you’ve got no radios, we only get one chance at this.
