A former pilot believes it is highly improbable that a bird strike caused the crew to be unable to deploy the emergency landing gear. He explains that such a strike wouldn't have rendered the alternative landing gear inoperable and that planes are designed to fly on one engine.

A former pilot has said it is 'extremely unusual' for plane crew not to be able to deploy its alternative emergency landing gear .Terry Tozer said a bird strike - one suspected cause of the crash - would not have rendered them inoperable because they don't depend on any other systems, like hydraulics.'You simply unlock it and it falls down with gravity,' he said.In fact, planes should be able to fly 'perfectly happily' on one engine, even if a bird struck the other one.

'It's the sort of thing you practice in the simulator all the time.'Regulations require passenger aircraft to be able to take off even if one engine fails at the most critical moment, he explained.'Whilst a bird strike might have caused an initial problem, I can't see how it would have affected the undercarriage.'Mr Tozer continued: 'Normally with an engine failure, you would expect to go into the hold perhaps, go through an emergency check list, and figure out what you can do and what your options were.'Instead, he said it appears there was 'an event that created problems for the crew, that, for whatever reason, they were unable to deal with'
