The national government has allocated P50 million as humanitarian package to around 10,000 workers who have been fighting for the unpaid wages from a Saudi construction firm for almost a decade now.

Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople said the fund will come from the agency and the Department of Social Welfare and Development—the agreement is that the two agencies will provide P5,000 each for all the claimants for a total of P10,000.

Ople said the Board of Trustees of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration has approved the humanitarian package during a meeting on March 6. At least three Saudi construction firms declared bankruptcy in 2015 and in 2016 which led to the non-payment of wages for their foreign workers that include 10,000 Filipinos.

The issue has been the subject of dialogues between the Philippines and the Saudi Arabia governments in the past few years. In January this year, the Philippine government secured a commitment from the Saudi Arabia government that it would allocate funds for the unpaid wages. The delay, on the other hand, is brought by legal processes that have to be undertaken since the companies involved are private-owned.

“The Marcos administration is extending the financial assistance to the unpaid OFWs while waiting for the talks between the two governments set for this month,” said Ople, adding that she was also instructed by the President to make full use of prudent diplomacy in discussing with the Saudi government on the issue of unpaid back wages.
