“I’d have been grateful to be alive but you want to live a comfortable life and that’s what I feel as though this programme has done for me” How thousands of rectal cancer patients have been saved from incontinence and invasive surgery by a new study ⬇️

Dr Chong said: “We don’t promise patients that they’re never going to have surgery, as there is a proportion of patients where the cancer does regrow, but we know there are patients 10 years on who have avoided a stoma bag and they’ve had families and full working lives.

“It’s a collaborative approach with colleagues internationally and builds up that confidence that we can better look after our patients. That’s the key thing,” she said. “We also take biopsies at the time where the cancer has regrown so we can compare and contrast the DNA and RNA changes, which gives us an idea about the genes that drive resistance to radiotherapy treatment.

Richard McGinley was initially told that he may need extensive surgery and a permanent double stoma after being diagnosed with rectal cancer in August 2021. The tumour had also grown around his prostate gland, so removing that was also being considered, along with part of his bladder. Richard said avoiding surgery has allowed him to carry on with life “as normal as possible”. The check-ups should become less frequent after two years of being given the all clear.
