A man carrying a pipe was shot to death Thursday by a Saguache County sheriff’s deputy near Crestone.
The Saguache County deputy was driving near Crestone around noon on Thursday when he saw a 40-year-old white man walking about a mile from the entrance of the Baca Grande community, according to aencompasses about 14,000 acres of land on the western edge of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and the eastern edge of the Rio Grande geological rift in the San Luis Valley.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and the deputy was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
