Pirates chairman Bob Nutting told The Athletic he is “worried” that Bryan Reynolds wrongly interpreted the Pirates' November extension offer as being disrespectful. Reynolds reiterated that talks between him and Pittsburgh remain deadlocked.
Nutting and Reynolds avoided talking about his contract status in those conversations around the batting cage.
“We haven’t had any, like, ‘number talks’ or anything like that,” Reynolds said. “It’s been really casual, friendly conversations.” Last April, Reynolds agreed to a two-year, $13.5 million contract that covered his first two years of arbitration eligibility. He won’t become a free agent until after the 2025 season.
The Pirates typically avoid contract talks once the regular season begins so the matter doesn’t become a distraction. Reynolds said he has not thought about issuing a deadline for an extension. Nutting indicated the talks could continue after Opening Day, if necessary. “I think any sense of urgency has been created by some outside factors,” Nutting said. “I think that may have been over overweighted, frankly. But at the same time, if it’s important to Bryan, it’s important to us. He’s a critically important part of the team. There’s no certainly no formal clock ticking on our end.”
