A contentious plan to build a school at a flood-prone Brisbane site has been abandoned as officials say the need for the new school is not as urgent as once thought.
On Wednesday, the state government announced “unprecedented flooding and further community consultation” meant the site was no longer suitable.
Until then, schools at Indooroopilly, Ironside and Toowong would receive new and upgraded facilities, including additional student capacity.and supposed to open in 2024, was earlier mooted for the grounds of Indooroopilly State High but that idea also faced pushback, and the department looked at more than 60 sites.
The department would select a new site, but meanwhile, a $13 million learning centre was being built at Park Ridge State High, which would add capacity for 200 students next term, and Loganlea State High School would receive upgrades.Department of Education“Good governments are constantly reviewing what needs to be done and where, and it’s clear some of our new schools aren’t needed as quickly as was predicted a few years ago,” she said.
