BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty interrupted Thursday morning's live program to deliver some devastating 'breaking news.' At the start of today's (January 30) broadcast, the duo reported that viewers were waking up to the horrifying event as a plane and a helicopter had collided over Washington DC before diving into the icy Potomac River.

The aircraft, departing from Wichita, Kansas, transported 60 passengers and four crew members, while the military helicopter carried three US Army soldiers. 'A plane with more than 65 people on board and a military helicopter has crashed just above Washington, DC, and plunged into the Potomac River,' Naga recounted. Footage went live from the scene in Washington DC, where BBC North America correspondent Merlyn Thomas was poised to offer further details to those watching. Charlie provided: 'Here's some of the live images coming through from Washington this morning. In the last few minutes, there has been a press conference. The US coastguard says that 18 bodies have been recovered so far. We'll bring you the very latest.' Merlyn proceeded to communicate that there hadn't been an official word on the complete toll of victims but shared that the helicopter had been embarking on a practice flight when it met with the civilian airliner. 'We know that there is a major rescue operation that's underway that's ongoing right now with rescue divers and police officials and emergency responders gathering to undertake this rescue operation. We're still waiting to find out more information,' she added, reports the Express. 'President Trump, in recent hours, has expressed his condolences and thanked the responders who are attending to this emergency, but he has also questioned exactly what has happened and suggested that this incident may have been entirely preventable.' The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to CBS News that the collision occurred on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 pm local time. Approximately 300 emergency responders are currently in 'rescue mode,' with police divers and boats scouring the water for survivors under challenging, windy, dark conditions. At a recent press conference, DC fire chief John Donnelly stated: 'We don't know if there are survivors, but we are working on it.
