DailyMail.com reporter Emma James recounts her chilling experience witnessing the aftermath of a plane crash into the Potomac River at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Having just landed from a flight, she observed a swarm of emergency vehicles rushing towards the river, eventually learning about the tragic collision involving American Airlines flight 5342 and a Black Hawk helicopter.
LIVE BLOG:Flashing red lights and emergency services are not uncommon on the tarmac at any busy international airport, and as a reporter for DailyMail.com who has traveled thousands of miles, I should know.
But once the other emergency vehicles kept pouring in, all heading straight for the river, my blood ran cold. DailyMail.com reporter Emma James had just landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport minutes before the fatal plane crash occurred. She is seen outside Terminal 2 where American Airlines is located
But when it was confirmed that commercial American Airlines flight 5342 had been downed the tension in the terminal was immediately palpable. Emma recalled arriving at the airport to see a caravan of emergency vehicles flashing their lights, all heading straight for the river Those in the terminal further away from the incident went from angry to horrified, with a lack of information from the airport itself meant many found out what had happened from online.
But that feeling of relief brings genuine guilt for not immediately thinking of those who were on board the flight, so close to the safety of the runway.
