Great Harwood Labour councillors call for a review of the proposed leisure centre at Wilsons Playing Fields due to concerns about inflation and location.
Plans to build a new £12.6million leisure centre at Wilsons Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors should be put on hold for a year Hyndburn’s Full Council will be told.
The two Overton ward councillors have led opposition to the scheme and called for any new swimming pool to replace the one closed at Great Harwood’s Mercer Hall to be located in the township. Their move follows cabinet minister Michael Gove giving the leisure centre proposal final government approval earlier this month.In September Hyndburn planning committee voted by six votes to five with two abstentions to grant permission for the project.
“There has been no clarity on the financial risk, with contradictory statements made in council and in public. Furthermore, we have had a recent change in leadership at the council, with the Conservatives now in coalition with two Green councillors, yet building at Wilson’s involves unnecessary building on green belt land and an increase in traffic on an already congested and polluted Whalley Road.
