The Murray Play Foundation - which includes Judy Murray - has withdrawn long-standing plans to build a new £20million tennis and golf centre at Park of Keir to cement the legacy of sons Andy and Jamie.
Proposals for a controversial new tennis and golf centre development to honour the legacy of Sir Andy Murray have been scrapped.
The £20million project – inspired by the careers of Dunblane brothers Andy and Jamie Murray and driven by their mother Judy – was intended to provide affordable access to leisure for thousands of people of all ages and abilities, and to grow the sports of tennis, pickleball and padel by creating an accessible, community-focused pay-to-play centre with indoor and outdoor courts, gym, exercise studio, soft play, and a multi-use games area .
“Judy has been involved in promoting sport and tennis her whole life. This not-for-profit project was an opportunity to build a base in Scotland that would have lasted beyond her lifetime and given the next generation greater opportunity to access courts, competition, and coaching. Over 12 years, Judy has invested significant time and encountered indifference and opposition for much of that period.
The LTA said at that time that the funding was agreed subject to the centre receiving the latest necessary planning approvals from Stirling Council later this year but stands alongside work to refurbish 175 tennis courts in Scottish public parks, as well as further investment in public tennis facilities across Britain.King insisted that the best legacy for Andy Murray following his retirement from the sport would be for the controversial tennis centre proposed at Park of Keir to be built.
A Notice of Intention to approve the development was issued in 2017, pending a Section 75 agreement between the applicant and Stirling Council. In summer 2021 opponents RAGE organised ‘an 11th hour’ petition containing more than 1500 signatures, however Ministers granted approval.
