Owners Landsec have dropped plans to demolish Buchanan Galleries in favour of a new masterplan that will retain the existing building as an 'anchor' for a revitalized city centre district. The decision follows a strong recovery in the retail sector post-pandemic.

The proposal, which involved replacing the shopping centre with a residential development and new city centre streets, hit headlines last year, promising to better reflect changing shopping habits and encourage more Glaswegians to live in the city centre.

A new masterplan will now be drawn up, including a building adjacent to Buchanan Galleries, at 229-249 Buchanan Street. The previous plan sparked controversy as it included the removal of the Sauchiehall Street portion of the Galleries, making it difficult to retain the Royal Concert Hall steps. "The incremental approach to redevelopment of the site, hopefully starting with the multistorey car park that presents a dead frontage to Killermont Street and North Hanover Street, will also mean that the city centre won’t be blighted by a massive construction site for several years. It will also hopefully retain John Lewis, which is one of the last major department stores in Glasgow, along with House of Fraser at the other end of Buchanan Street.
