Major development on Manchester-Salford border halted by notorious footpath
The proposed redevelopment of retail park on the Manchester-Salford border into four high-rise towers has been scuppered - by a now-notorious footpath.
They would sit opposite a new ‘neighbourhood’ to be built on the existing Regent Road Retail Park containing the third-tallest-tower in the UK, where Sainsbury’s is now. However, Salford council has stopped the demolition going ahead over how a footpath near to the casino would be affected. The Manchester Evening News understands that the footpath, which runs alongside the River Irwell, is the same towpath which caused an uproar at Ralli Quays, half-a-mile upriver from the casino.
However, following multiple meetings between the developers and campaigners, a deal was struck to guarantee that ‘from the hotel opening date the towpath shall be dedicated as highway for use by pedestrians for public access in perpetuity’ and the hotel will not open until ‘the route is open and available for use by the public’.
A decision notice confirming the demolition plans had been refused said: “The submitted written description of the proposed development and restoration of the site is not sufficiently robust enough with regards to how the environmental risks to the River Irwell and associated footway would be managed during the demolition of the Casino and how this prominent site would be restored post demolition.
