Chaired by Councillor Robert Brown, the Rutherglen 900 Group are organising the celebration for 2026.
Plans are underway to celebrate the 900th anniversary of Rutherglen as a Royal Burgh – and its claim as the oldest in Scotland.
The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.It is hoped that 2026 would see events throughout the year, with an opening ceremony-type launch event in January through to the Landemer Festival in June to a closing event at the end of the year,
They stress however that they will be launching a programme of community consultation and engagement to get the best ideas from local people and they want as many people involved and committed to the project as possible. The winner will receive a £50 voucher and will see their logo done up by a professional graphic designer for it to be used on all communications and social media for the Rutherglen 900 group.
The 900 Committee also have an eye on leaving a lasting legacy for the Royal Burgh from 2026. One aim is the possible renovation of the Overtoun Park bandstand allowing musical performances, perhaps featuring Rutherglen’s great history of folk singing, alongside songs from school choirs and local bands.
