New research suggests that eating a diet rich in plant proteins, particularly nuts and legumes, could significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease. The study, involving more than 200,000 adults over 30 years, reveals that such a diet can lower the risk of heart disease by over a quarter and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by nearly a fifth.

Research suggests that eating a plant-based diet rich in nuts and legumes could significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease . Over a 30-year study involving more than 200,000 adults, US researchers found that those who consumed high amounts of plant proteins had a 25% lower risk of coronary heart disease and nearly a 20% lower risk of cardiovascular disease .

The study, led by Harvard University, attributes these benefits to the high fibre and antioxidant content in plant-based proteins which prevent arteries from getting blocked. Experts advocate for a shift towards plant-based proteins, with a recommended ratio of at least 1:2 plant to animal protein to effectively reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
