Close eye kept on the Queen during busy Jubilee commitments
In recent months, the 96-year-old monarch has cancelled a run of major engagements including the State Opening of Parliament. A week later, after a busy autumn programme, she was ordered to rest by her doctors and advised to cancel a trip to Northern Ireland. The custom of Trooping the Colour to honour the Sovereign's Birthday was initiated in 1805, though it was deferred from 1811 until 1820 due to the illness of King George III.
From around 1700 onwards, company Colours were gradually eliminated in favour of battalion Colours, though their original purpose of marking a rallying point, clearly visible above the smoke and dust of battle, remained unaltered.The Queen's four-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations will kick off at 10am with the pomp and pageantry of the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
