A young Plean miner was another familiar name that residents back in Stirling were cheering for at the Paris Olympics in 1924.

George Gardiner, a freestyle wrestler, was selected to represent the country at the summer games and put up a valiant effort to finish fourth in the under 66kg category.

William, Robert and James were known as “the Wrestling Brothers of Denny”. David went to the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, but he was declared a professional because he had won money at Highland Games, and could not compete. “He is a member of the Partick Club, Glasgow, and has within recent years carried off numerous honours in the amateur class, but his country at the big international games, where the best of the world’s amateurs compete, comes as a singular honour, as he is only 23 years of age.”George won the Scottish Wrestling Championship a short time before his selection in the 11 stone 4lbs class at Partick, thereby qualifying to meet the English champion in London for the British Championship.

But with his impressive showing he was recognised as one of the country’s most scientific wrestlers, sealing his selection for the Olympics.
