Plymouth Argyle have appointed Miron Muslic as their new head coach, replacing Wayne Rooney who departed last month. Muslic joins on a three-and-a-half-year contract and will watch his new team's FA Cup tie against Brentford before officially taking charge.
Plymouth Argyle have appointed Miron Muslic as their new head coach on a three-and-a-half-year contract - ten days after parting ways with Wayne Rooney . Rooney left on New Year's Eve alongside former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan, who had only reunited with the former striker three weeks earlier. Argyle won just five of 25 matches with Rooney in charge this season and are bottom of the Championship table in their second straight season at that level.
However, they are unbeaten in their two games since Rooney's exit, with first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards leading them to consecutive draws against Bristol City and Stoke City. Their new coach, though, will take over after the FA Cup third round tie away against Brentford. Argyle confirmed that Muslic will be watching at the Gtech Community Stadium alongside the club's chairman, Simon Hallett. The club statement confirming the news claimed he was the 'number one choice with the board.' Hallett is said to be delighted about being able to appoint the coach, explaining: 'Miron had a clear vision of how he wanted to take Argyle forward and showed a depth of tactical awareness, which made it clear exactly how he wanted the team to set up and play. 'He comes with glowing reviews from his time at Cercle Brugge, where he took a team from a lowly league position to European football, which is no mean feat. I want to welcome him to the club and look forward to seeing him have an immediate impact on the team.' The statement adds incoming head coach Muslic is 'highly rated throughout Europe' and he has 'a reputation for a courageous football style and developing and nurturing young players.' During three years at Cercle Brugge, initially as an assistant and then as the leading man, he led the club into the Europa League third qualifying round and then UEFA Conference League league phase before being sacked a month ago
