Anthony Albanese says changing the status quo by force in Taiwan or elsewhere in Asia would be disastrous and urged China to set ‘guardrails’ with the US.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stepped up warnings over China’s behaviour, declaring any attempt to change the status quo by force across Asian flashpoints, including Taiwan and the South China Sea, would see the consequences of conflict outstrip any potential prize.

Mr Albanese also offered a strong justification for Australia’s own military build-up, including the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines, saying it was an “investment in regional stability”. Tensions between China and the US have dominated in the lead up to this year’s dialogue, with Mr Austin saying it was “unfortunate” Mr Li had snubbed his invitation for a meeting on the sidelines.Highlighting the risk of military miscalculation, the Pentagon revealed on Tuesday a Chinese fighter jet had last week intercepted a US surveillance plane over the South China Sea, with Mr Austin warning such incidents could “spiral out of control”.

“The consequences of such a breakdown – whether in the Taiwan Strait or elsewhere – would not be confined to the big powers or the site of their conflict, they would be devastating for the world.” “No one wants to be in a position where we have to either contain China’s rise or limit America’s presence,” he said.
