Tonight, breezes and cloud levels kick up a half-notch or so ahead of one last warm day tomorrow

Blue hour Friday morning with cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin in Washington D.C. The warmth is down but not out, with mere 60s compared to the heat from recent days . A stronger cold front arriving tomorrow won’t prohibit one last day of 60s, but it will be cloudier and breezier as drier air moves in.

Clouds increase to about partly cloudy levels overnight. A few southerly breezes may gust near 20 mph late night as well, but generally winds are still tame. Temperatures very gradually dip to pre-sunrise mid-40s to around 50 degrees.Cloud levels are a bit uncertain, but we will see much more partial cloudiness, at least, compared to Saturday. Winds from the west and northwest really get going, especially during the afternoon when we could see gusts near 30 mph in a couple spots.

In the D.C. area, Climate Central offers helpful graphics to give context over the last 53 years. Average high temperatures for the season are now 1.4 degrees warmer than in 1970. Note that this is for the time period of “meteorological spring,” March through May and, above, just applies to average high temperatures each day. When we include the faster-warming overnight low temperatures—taking each day’s 24 hour temperatures as a whole — the warmth is a more noticeable 2 degrees since 1970.

Curious about how many more warm spring days are popping above average in recent years? Nowadays we see at least 10 days of warm, above-average spring days compared to 53 years ago. Warm days have become more frequent. Notice that there were always a number of days above average, but that trend continues upward. On Harry Potter night in Houston, Wizards get lost in chamber of secrets
