Longtime Supervisor Aaron Peskin will make his long-awaited entry into the race on Saturday in a Chinatown rally
Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, who will formally announce his candidacy for mayor on Saturday, confirmed to Politico on Wednesday that he is jumping into the San Francisco mayoral race.
Peskin’s imminent announcement, reported by multiple outlets earlier this week, prompted immediate acrimony from his opponents, including incumbent Mayor London Breed. Prominent progressive candidates have taken a drubbing in recent elections. Former District Attorney Chesa Boudin was recalled in 2022, and the progressive who ran in his absence later that year handily lost. That same year, Supervisors Joel Engardio and Matt Dorsey defeated more traditionally progressive candidates, with Engardio pulling off a rare upset over an elected incumbent.
Housing is likely to be a key wedge point between the candidates. Broadly, San Francisco progressives have demanded investment in affordable housing while recoiling at YIMBY advocates’ attempts to spur market-rate housing development through upzoning and other means.
